Texas News: Affordable Energy currently offers residential rates for areas of  Texas as low as 11.4 Cents per kWh. If you live in  an area serviced by the  TDSP (poles and wires) company of AEP North, or WTU, you could be in for big savings. Affordable Energy now offers the low electric rates of 11.4 cents a kWh for these areas. If you would like to use your Power to Choose then Click Here to check your area and rates. Houston Texas for the most part uses Centerpoint Energy as it’s poles and wires company. If you live in an area of Houston where Centerpoint is the TDSP provider, then your electricity rates for a 1 year contract would be  13.2 cents per kWh for a 1 year contract. It would be 13.4 for a 2 or 3 year contract. If your provider is Texas New Mexico Power, or AEP Central, the rates would also be 13.2 for a 1 year contract, and 13.4 for a 2 or 3 year contract.

If you Live in Other Areas

If you live in other areas of the state and have  ONCOR as the TDSP poles and wires company, then your rates with Affordable Energy would be 12.6 cents per kWh for a 1 year contract. It would be 12.9 for a 2 or 3 year contract.

This may be because several electricity generation companies, Dallas based Luminant Energy and Luminant Generation, and the cities of Austin, and Brownsville, all filed a motion against the rate in November 2008. But all the entities were able to agree on the lowered rate, so it passed.

Keep in mind however that this is an “interim” charge, and is not the final charge for this surcharge. The final charge will be decided once ERCOT has analysed and reviewed its Nodal immplementation schedule. There will be a scheduled meeting in March 2009 to decide the actual surcharge amounts, but the 23 cents per MWh will be used for the time being.

Every commercial business in Texas will see the new charge early in 2009. My sources tell me that the Oncor areas of Texas will start December 29, 2009, and for Centerpoint the anticipated date of charges is February 2, 2009.

What can a small business, commercial or industrial business do to offset this?

Why not simply lower your rates? Then the surcharge won’t matter much if you save much more than the surcharge. Let us help you. Compact Flourescent Lights have been around for a while and have proven themselves effective. They first of all last 10 to 13 times longer. This by itself can be quite a savings, but there is more. They save 70%-80% in usage costs. That means if every light in your house was a CFL, you would save from 70%-80% 0n your lighting bill. And we all know that if you have kids, lights are not going off in your house. So saving money when the lights are on is great. And of course the savings will be better when the lights finally go off.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that if all light bulbs were exchanged for the new cost efficient CFL’s the U.S. would cut it’s collective electrical lighting bill in half. I suppose there are some lights that need to be of another type for other reasons.
