The following is a rate comparison between Reliant Energy, TXU Energy and Affordable Energy. Texas electricity deregulation has made these rate comparisons possible. One Year Fixed (12 Months)

Reliant: 15.6 Cents per kWh

TXU: 14.7 Cents per kWh

Affordable Energy: 11.7 Cents per kWh

We would have done a 2 and 3 year rate comparison here, but Reliant only had a 1 year rate published with the Power to Choose site. TXU did publish a 2 year rate and it was 14.9 cents per kWh. Compare that with Affordable Energy’s 2 year rate of 12.7 Cents per kWh.

It is a well known fact in the Electricity Industry that, just like anything else, if you want a good price you can have it. Just buy a lot of it, and guarantee that you will buy it for a significant amount of time, and show that you can afford it.

Some still complain that Texas Electric rates are higher than they should be after deregulation. And a few Mayors and Legislators agree, the Mayors say just form large buying groups called aggregations, and buy wholesale.

Walmart is it’s own aggregation, as far as Electricity in Texas and probably other places is concerned. So, let those who would create a buying group do it. In fact, if you have large ELECTRICITY  BUYING in mind, for your organization CONTACT US and we will get you in touch with the right parties to get you an aggregated price on Texas Electricity. Your group does not have to be in the same town, they just all need to be in Texas.

But what I question is the need for the following Bills submitted to this years Texas Legislature: Do we need to add more regulatory paperwork? Or do we need to just allow groups to aggregate their electricity buying power together as they see fit? Keep in mind that Texas is a leader in the amount of laws on the books. Lawyers make fun of Texas on this point often.  And also  many laws we have in Texas  makes us a leader in laws with no teeth, and laws that make no sense. I remember in my law classes how we would talk about this arcane law on the books in Texas, where presumably it is illegal to carry a pair of of wire cutters to town.  So, before we sign in a bunch of nonsense, lets make aggregation easier for all involved.

I think also the Mayors and Legislators alike should realize something when they are wanting to change how business is done. Texas, with all it’s leadership on the subject of regulation has done little to get the word out about deregulation. Most people don’t really realize that they can get lower rates today. And for the ones that do, they fear change. That is part of your high prices right there.

I say spend a little advertising money, (you can help the economy at the same time) and let people know that they can change, it is safe to change, and how to change electric companies. Sooner or later, the business competition will let them know, and word of mouth, but truly, most people pay higher rates now because of sheer ignorance. I say let these Mayors and Legislators do a little more with electricity education.

Let’s also keep in mind that a few electric companies went bankrupt by trying to give lower rates, and locked their customers in at these rates, then oil and gas took off. Lets not legislate in Electric Power failure. Why don’t we allow the markets to work? And give them a hand, but not constrain them with undue regulation.

Take a look at some of the House Bills that were proposed. They were summarized in the San Antonio Business Journal.

* House Bill 2782, by Keffer, would limit ownership or control of generation capacity to no more than 20 percent of total generation capacity within each of ERCOT’s four congestion zones. This is intended to enhance competition and mitigate market power abuses.

Some of the following such as disallowing electric disconnections during intense heat may have already been addressed. And lets hope House Bill’s 2851 and 2782 define what “market power abuse” would be, before unleashing regulatory enforcement by the PUC. You would think that if there were harmed people, by any entity that there are also remedies available. Is this a necessary bill?

* House Bill 2781, by Keffer, calls for ERCOT to abandon its efforts to surcharge certain wholesale electricity costs by specific geographic points known as nodes. The creation of this so-called “nodal” system is projected to cost nine times more than original estimates. It also will likely increase consumer bills in many parts of Texas, he says.

* House Bill 2780, by Keffer, would permit cities to create and implement opt-out citizen aggregation programs. This would enhance competitive options for all market participants and lower prices.

* House Bill 3245, by Rep. Solomons, would implement a series of important customer protections, including prohibitions against electric disconnections during days of intense summer heat.

* HB 2851, by Rep. Farabee, would allow entities harmed by market power abuse to participate in enforcement actions brought by the Public Utility Commission.

No, some cities such as Austin Texas have so far decided against allowing competition in their markets. They are prepared to should the need arise, but so far that need has not arisen. Other entities such as member-owned electric cooperatives have the right to decide whether or not to allow deregulation of electricity, and therefore allow competition.

You can check to see if your city is deregulated by using a simple form provided by Affordable Energy. Just click on the link (CLICK HERE), and add your service address to the form and verify if the address entered is correct. Then if your area is deregulated, you will see the rates that Affordable Energy is offering your area. You can compare them to your current rate on your bill and decide if you would like to switch electric service.  If you sign- up online for electric service there, then call 1-713-337-2965 to confirm your electric company switch. Usually, your electric meter will be read a final time before the new company starts. Make sure you do not currently have a contract with your current electric provider, as they may have a charge for not completing the contract. If you don’t have internet service, you can call 1-866-797-4839 to check to see what areas are deregulated.

What has not changed with electric service in Houston Texas?

The very same poles and wires company (TDSP) is still the same company as it was before deregulation. You will still call them if a power line is down. They will still maintain the wires and poles necessary to get electricity to you. Your electricity delivery will still be reliable. It will not matter which electricity company you are receiving the electricity from.

What has changed in electric service for Houston Texas?

Well the most obvious difference now is that you do have a choice as to which providers you use. We call these companies Retail Electric Providers, or REP’s.  All Retail Electric Providers will provide you the same information you are used to getting on your bill, it just may be arranged differently.

The cumulative effect of having new companies enter the Texas electric energy market, is of course competition. And, over time competition should drive prices down. Their could be more creative thinking and in the end more products and services for the end user.

Keep in mind that your poles and wires company will still deliver your electricity safely and reliably. Remember they are still regulated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, (PUCT).

What about rates, are they high or low?

Texas electric rates are average for the U.S. But, Texas uses electric energy at a very high rate. The hot Texas summers cause air conditioners to demand lots of electricity. As deregulation begins to mature in Texas we could see prices for electricity trend lower over time. As more energy companies compete, one of the biggest features will be price.

Do Texas residents have to switch electric providers?

No. If you are happy with your current electricity provider, you may stay. But if you do want to switch, there is no charge to do so, and you may get lower rates, which will add up to savings for you. You can call and ask your electric service provider if you have an electric contract. You may also be on a month to month contract, where the rates are variable. Usually this type of contract has no charge associated with leaving the company.

A lady that was paying 18 cents per KwH, we were able to get her 12.9 per KwH. She was thrilled. Later Reliant Energy sent her a letter asking her to stay. They offered her 15.7 cents per KwH. So they wanted to save her 2.3 cents a KwH, while are saving her over 5 cents a KwH!

I asked her if she switched, and she just laffed. I mean hard and out-loud. She said, “Heavens no!, you guys have saved me so much compared to Reliant Energy, I can’t believe it really. Good work!”.

5.1 /18= 28.33 % Savings  Let us see if we can get you similar savings. This lady’s last bill was $900 She would save, with a similar bill the following month, about $254.
