Protecting Yourself from Swine Flu: First with Understanding

By admin • April 28th, 2009

First of all, swine flu is not caught by eating pork. Eat all you want.

Swine flu is just a variation of flu, or influenza. This is a virus. Birds are thought to be carriers and these viruses mutate. It turns out that pigs also are huge carriers of viruses. All viruses mutate and change. The theory is that when people live too close with fowl, or swine, every now and then, a mutation happens that allows a human to get it.

Once it enters the human population it also starts to mutate.

Viruses are usually very old. At least many that we see everyday, like colds and the usual flu. They are usually harmless because of how the flu becomes tame. New flu’s, when they first hit the human population can be very deadly, partly because we have no immunity. A very virulent flu that killed all of it’s hosts would also die out. So, it’s strategy is to mutate and to become live-able within the infected population.

The time frame for this to happen is not yet fully known. But, it is suspected that old viruses like the Epstein Barre virus, probably did used to kill people. Now, it just infects a large portion on the population, and then goes dormant, and stays that way for years and years within the body.

If we study this closely, this isn’t the first time the world has worried about a swine flu. Back in about 1976 there was a small outbreak, and lots of vaccines were created to fight it. But, most of the outbreak subsided, (probably partly due to the mutation process). I personally took one of these shots, and spent the rest of my life wishing that I didn’t. Partly because it turned out to be not needed, and second because it made me sick with flu like symptoms. So, if they offer a swine flu vaccine, unless it is a dire need, I will pass.

So, what the health officials want to see is this — will the swine flu quickly mutate itself into a more benign species, and quit causing complications that can kill? If so, the Swine Flu “epidemic” will play itself out in no time. Every day that the death toll drops you are getting safer.

We are no where near the numbers of sick people that they had with the so called Spanish Flu, where large percentages of populations were lost.

But why not be safe?

I’ve been reading a lot about the Swine Flu and was a little confused until I read this blog. The epidemiologists have not been very clear when they explain things. This blog totally “nailed it”.
